These 5 Dress Shoes Every Man Should Own
Importance of a Good Rotation
You’ve probably had one of those days where you just stare at your shoe collection and think, man I could use an update. Has it been months or evens years since you took a moment to think how long you’ve been wearing the same pair of lace-up dress shoes to work. Do you still have that favorite pair of suede dress shoes that’ve worn through the insole on top of already being resoled multiple times? If that’s the case then yes, it’s probably time to look at updating your shoe wardrobe. I’ll help make it little less stressful and give you a great recommendation. Get a solid rotation going. Here are the 5 Dress Shoes Every Man Should Own.
The 5 Dress Shoes Every Man Should Own
- Monk Straps
- Oxfords
- Penny Loafer
- Slip-On Dress Shoe
- Chelsea Boots
Yes, this is my list and what I think will be a good foundation for you to begin your shoe hunt with. If you take this list with you and slowly check em off, then you’ll see how much of a difference it makes. You’ll see it with how creative you can get in defining your unique style, feel confident in the way you present yourself, and hopefully find a new passion with footwear. Here’s the why to each of the shoes I believe is a must.
Monk Straps
Odds are you’ve probably never owned a pair and thought how funky they look on other guys wearing them. Those are indeed the shoes with two buckles that go across the instep and look like something only super-fancy dudes would rock. No that is not the case. Monk Straps are a classic men’s dress shoes that gives a little more definition to your dress shoe. Those standard lace ups are important, but why not test your limits out a bit and see how monk straps look with your work suit. They are a little more elegant looking but are super versatile and will definitely catch the passerby. If the double monk strap is too much then give the single strap a shot and work your way up from there. Try on the monk straps casually at first just to go out with and test them out. Guarantee they’ll grow on you.
Oxfords
This is probably what you already have three to four different variants of. Maybe a few different brown shades, the go-to black shoe, and some different brogue patterns. That’s a great start. I would definitely agree with having a solid foundation but have a good reason behind each particular shoe as well. Do you have some distressed ones for that more casual weekend look or bar-hopping shoe thats weathered multiple nights with you? Does the particular work shoe stand out as a top quality shoe with a leather sole and defined toe? Maybe you bought that one particular brown oxford to match with your lucky belt to complete the whole outfit. On top of owning a nice variety of oxfords make sure to take care of them and they’ll stick with you for years.
Penny Loafer
I say Penny Loafer because it is the standard and most common shoe for work amongst loafers. All Penny Loafers are easy slip-ons with a leather strap and narrow cut out in the center. That’s your standard dress shoe. However, why not vary within the loafer world a bit. If you like the Penny Loafer, get a nice pair and something that differentiates with the thousands of similar styles out there. If you’re adventurous then check out some tassel loafers or bit loafer styles. Tassels are super traditional, but many brands out there have elevated the design with their own flair. Bit loafers feel more European and give an overall dressier look. Find a loafer that defines you and then branch out with the amazing styles out there.
Slip-On Dress Shoe
So you’ve got the lace up oxford for work, but have you ever thought about a straight leather slip-on dress shoe? In particular a good black pair? Save a little time bending over to tie those laces and invest in a nice pair of slip-on dress shoes. Wear them with your suit, a dressier party, or just to have a something to mix-it-up with. Once again, purchase one with a good looking toe box. Don’t look like you don’t care about your shoe game and fall for the rounded toe box look. Find a pair that exudes the confidence of a difference maker.
Chelsea Boot
Chelsea boot? Never heard of it. Yeah well you’ve seen it and probably just say European men wear them. No no no. They are indeed the shoe with the elastic stretch bands on the back part of the shoe. However, they are not just the European guy’s shoe. Go online hunting or to your local shoe shop and ask about Chelsea boots. Slip one on and take a look in the mirror. It’s a style that’s super versatile and elevates your fashion sense up a notch. I love Chelsea boots and believe more men should take a chance with them. They go great with business casual outfits, denim, or your favorite pair of chinos. Once again do your research here and find a particular look for you.
