This past summer I was given the fortunate opportunity to travel to Tallinn, Estonia and get a private tour of the increasingly popular video chat service Skype at their headquarters. It’s a bit surprising to see one of the most popular online companies is stationed clear over in Eastern Europe where it originally was started. Estonia is not very big, but Microsoft definitely caught eye of their growing company and recently bought the company for a hefty $8.5 billion in 2011.
At the time of my visit they were currently expanding and revamping the whole Skype office. The Microsoft brand name could be seen much more noticeably in the environment. Even our name tags included the Microsoft label on it instead of Skype. We met up with the Director of Operations, a very expressive and outgoing Estonian woman who was also known as the “mother” to the whole company staff. She gave us a great tour of the multilevel office building and all the new additions they had incorporated into the work space. Many new colors and creative design objects had been included into different areas of the building giving it a very modern and enjoyable workspace feeling. Check out the photos below.
I would really like to visit Skype headquarters with a group of boardmembers/managers from the Netherlands, but I can’t find a way to get in contact with the office it self to organize a tour… Can you perhaps help me??? 🙂
