My Latest Review of Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasins, a Classic Italian Shoe Everybody Should Own
I finally picked up my first pair of Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasins. If you’ve never heard of the brand before and ask someone for a shoe from them, this is what they will bring out. To many people if may just look like another regular slip-on shoe, but to a guy who really knows his shoes you should most definitely find a pair of Tod’s in his wardrobe. Here is what I have to share with the Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasin footwear review.
Little trivia first. Where does the Gommino name came from? Its given for the iconic rubber pebble style sole on the bottom. 133 to be exact. If you don’t believe me you can go ahead and try counting too. Gommino coincidentally also means “rubber tip” in Italian. Yes there are actual connections between the name and the shoe itself. Since its inception, the Tod’s Gommino Driving shoe has become one of the best sellers for Tod’s, and for good reason.
Are the Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasins Comfortable?
Let me tell you, they are super comfortable. Of course any driving shoe is meant to be comfortable, but try on some Tod’s and you’ll know what the chatter is all about. When I first slid into my pair I knew I was walking out with them. However, there are obviously other reasons why I absolutely love them, yet at the same time am a little worried about them.
The style. All I would tell you by looking at my pair of dark burgundy, pebbled leather Tod’s driving shoes would be about how beautiful they are to me. If you want an example of Made In Italy shoes then look no further. Everything with the style and quality of leather is all there. I do believe that you can really tell the quality of the leather just by feeling it. The insole is softer than many other designer brands out there and the finishing touches on the shoe are of great craftsmanship. The fancy laces, the stitching patterns, and the silhouette, it’s all there.
There are a vast amount of options out there under the Tod’s Gommino Driving Shoe line. From different laces, bits, and leather finishes, there is sure to be something for you. Eventually I would like to add a suede pair to my footwear collection. The shoe itself is also a very nice dress-casual shoe to have. They’re easy slip-ons to run errands with or go nicely with a dressy blazer and chinos. It’s the perfect shoe to get creative with.
Issues with the iconic Tod’s Gommino Driving Shoe
Now what could I possibly have to say in the negative light about the Tod’s Gommino Driving Shoe? Durability. Yes, you may have heard the rumors somewhere and I would tell you to believe them. Those little rubber knobs at the bottom? Yeah they don’t hold up as long as you’d hope they would. I have probably worn mine 4-5 times and some of the rubber knobs on the corner of the heel are starting to show their wear. I know they are rubber, but you would think they’d last longer than that amount of time.
A secondary effect of this issue is that it wears into the leather of the heel as well. Mine already show some wear in the heel as well as a little in the front. To some this may not be a big issue, but to others it does leave some thought on purchasing them. I have heard that the issue is repairable with a cobbler. If you do buy a pair of Tod’s take them to you’re cobbler to see what preventive measures they have.
Should You Own a Pair?
Tod’s are fabulous shoes and a classic Italian brand that I think everybody should have in their wardrobe. The Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasin does have the durability problem, but the pros outweigh the cons by far. Walk into a Tod’s store and check out for yourself why the Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasin has such continued success.
