Yayoi Kusama, Some Lady With a Red Wig
Yayoi Kusama; Image Via: Atlantic VoicesYayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist known for her colorful, psychedelic artworks is one of the most visible female artists in the art world today. Yayoi Kusama has collaborated with a variety of artists and showcased a number of galleries across the world, teaming up even with the likes of great artists such as Andy Warhol and Greg Seagal.
Originally coming over from Japan in the 1950’s with a strong emphasis in abstract expressionism, Yayoi eventually became involved with pop art and started working with dots which is she is most well known for today. Some of her most notable pieces include her work for Lacome and for Marc Jacobs who as the head designer of Louis Vuitton had her incorporate her dot elements into many accessories for the fashion line in 2006. Her dot works can also be seen on many commissioned sculptures throughout the world, the cover of the 2011 London Underground Maps, Museum art exhibits, and coverings whole buildings as special showings.
I could never imagine spending the massive amount of time with just utilizing dots to bring out a whole picture or idea to show people. It is pretty remarkable to see how just a basic simple form such as a dot mixed with a few bright colors can bring such a strong, empowering atmospherically change to an environment. It will be exciting to see what the artist who dons the red wig will have coming out the next few years.
